Was Giovanna Fletcher the rightful winner of I’m a Celebrity?

Giovanna Fletcher may have won the popular TV show, but Jordan North was an equally worthy champion in my opinion…

This year has been one of the worst years most of us have lived through, because of many reasons, one thing topping the list being lockdowns. At the end of October, for those living in England, the most terrifying thing about Halloween in 2020, was the announcement of our second national lockdown. With all of us stuck indoors yet again, it left many people craving one thing from their TV’s: three weeks of I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here.

Every year, the show pulls in massive ratings, as people glue themselves to over a fortnight of our favourite celebrities, eating bugs, sleeping in hammocks and, fingers crossed if it’s a good year, plenty of camp quarrels. This year, thank goodness, had been announced as going ahead despite the latest restrictions, however it was always going to be a bit different. Rather than jet setting to the sunny destination of Australia, all they really needed was a car to get them to neighbouring country and fellow UK-ers, Wales. Cold, wet, sheep filled Wales.

Let’s be honest, even though was a bit odd seeing them in a castle, all layered up in bundles of jackets, watching I’m a celebrity proved itself to be the outlet we all needed in this endlessly horrific year. You couldn’t help but love watching celebrities take on worse challenges than you not being able to have a pint down the pub. And the line up this year consisted of some big personalities including Shane Richie, Beverly Callard and Vernon Kay.

Supposedly the UK’s favourite member of the celeb cast was Giovanna Fletcher, as they crowned her the first Queen of the Castle on December 4th. Clearly despite popular belief, this result was one that I disagreed with, believing that runner up, Jordan North, should have instead been the king.

As a nation, we love a journey. Someone who rises from the bottom to the top and shows themselves up as a true winner after some wobbles. You don’t get much more of a journey than vomiting on a cliff edge, to then facing all your fears and making it to the final of a popular reality TV show. Jordan North went through everything from having a breakdown twice within the first couple of days, to finding his “Happy place” which turned out to be Burnley’s football ground, Turf Moor. So, what I saw, was a probably traumatized Northern man, not even getting the title he deserved at the end of it.

I’m not saying I didn’t like Giovanna. She was lovely, and she made me smile partly because she was chill and down to earth but also because she was kind and looked after everyone. Just in comparison to Jordan, I couldn’t help but think that she was on the border of being dull. She was a complete underdog at first, as even the bookies had Mr North tipped to win, but she came out of no-where with her mothering nature and won over the heart’s of the public.

I absolutely loved I’m a celebrity this year, and I tuned in every night to get my daily intake. The castle was a great new setting, and the celebs got on so well, you couldn’t dislike anyone in there. So I definitely don’t disagree with the result whole heartedly, I just think Jordan North may have had his title stolen. Maybe. Possibly.
